Tulsa Rose Garden

There was a break in the rain this afternoon and Smokey and I stopped by the Tulsa Rose Garden to see what was blooming. The roses are beginning to look nice and there will soon be more to come.

This beautiful pink climber is a Clair Matin and is framed by deep blue Clematis.

The Tulsa Municipal Rose Garden is beautiful from early May until late November. It is a great place to go at any time over the summer to see which rose varieties are holding up to our hot summer weather. Sue and I went there 3 summers ago in August and discovered the Knockout Shrub roses that are along our side fence. They were blooming when everything else looked hot and dry.

The Tulsa Municipal Rose Garden at Woodward Park

Constructed by the WPA using hand labor and teams of horses and a part of Woodward Park and the Tulsa Garden Center, the Municipal Rose Garden was inaugurated in 1934 and is a continuing project of Tulsa Parks and the Tulsa Garden Club.

It is an All-American Rose Society test garden containing 6,000 individual rose plants in 250 varieties. The classical garden is laid out on five terraces that climb the hill from Peoria Avenue and each terrace centers around a pool or fountain.

Reflecting pools with aquatic plants are featured on all Terraces; junipers are hand-sheared into formal, conical shapes within the garden; the area is flanked on the south and east by a wide variety of trees. Roses bloom from May until the first frost, usually in November.

Nice!

I can just imagine the smell... must be great to walk around.

In Ottawa, we have tulips right now, for the Tulips Festival. No roses, I guess it's too cold.

Smokey was with me and he did a lot of sniffing around but he wasn't looking for roses. We had tulips in late March so you are quite a bit behind us.

Your pictures could be taken by me in July rather than early May. England and Canada must be even more closely entwined than by just sharing our Queen and now, news for me, the later opening of the roses etc.

Thank you for the info about the catbird and the bird dog - never too old to garner information:-)
