Sarah's Big Day

Friday was Homecoming in Wagoner and our granddaughter Sarah was Queen.  In the afternoon was a big parade.

She rode in a vintage Oldsmobile Cutlass with her student escort and waved to the crowd.

After the parade we all gathered at her house for spaghetti.  Sarah is a senior this year and her sweetheart Daniel is a freshman at Oklahoma State.  He came to join her and brought flowers.  Smart man.

She was escorted onto the field by her father, my son Adam.  As icing on the cake, Wagoner won the football game.

It just doesn't get any sweeter than this.  Wow.

Skywatch Friday - Blue Sky over River

Tulsa is built on a bend in the Arkansas River.  The strip of land between Riverside Drive and the east bank of the river has been developed as a River Park.  The parks' 26 miles of asphalt-surfaced trails weave past gathering areas, playgrounds, fountains and sculptures along the banks of the river.  The river is filled bank to bank in this photo north of the Pedestrian Bridge to the 21st street bridge because water is retained just behind us by a low water dam.  The city is proposing to build several additional such retention dams at locations down stream to keep the river filled bank to bank as far south as the bridge to Jenks.  As it is now much of the river from the low water dam south is a sand bar most of the time.  Interest in developing attractions along the river would be encouraged if there were a stable water line.  The funds for this project will come from extending a small sales tax scheduled to be retired later in the year.  I think this is an investment in the future of our community and I hope it passes.

My son David took this photograph of a Harley Davidson motorcycle.  I don't know who the owner is but it certainly qualifies as "fancy".

Macro Monday - Pansy Faces

We are still having warm weather but the nights are getting cooler and I know that it will not be too long before the frost will come and nip at my roses and other blooming plants.  When that happens there is nothing quite as sturdy little pansies.  So a week ago We stopped at Southwood Nursery and picked up a assortment of little pansies.  I like the little ones as I think they are a bit heartier.  These have blooms that are a little less than an inch across.  When I was a little kid I made the startling discovery (to me) that the blossoms look like little faces and I have always enjoyed them for that if for no other reason.

Monday Macro - Dwarf Yellow Pansies

Plant pansies when the weather begins to cool down, they bloom all winter, replace them in late spring when the weather gets too hot.  There is none better for winter hardy bloom.  If you know something better, please pass it along.

Lights Out - Light a Candle

A storm blew through and knocked the lights out so we are making do with candles until the electricity is back on. I can post a photo of my candle using my iPhone. Nifty, huh?

We sat out in the garden room and read until it got dark then went into the bedroom and played our nightly game of gin rummy by candle light. The cool wind is blowing in the windows and it is quiet outdoors. Kind of nice.

Macro Monday - Celtic Cross

Sue gave me this 2 inch silver Celtic cross when we were first married.  I like the ancient Christian symbols; the descending dove, the chalice and bread, the celtic knots.  The bali chain is silver too and I wear it all the time under my shirt.  I like to think that this cross is like my faith, carried privately but next to my heart.

Black and White Reflections - Blue Moon

On Friday, August 31 we have what is called a “blue moon”.  The next time we get the chance to glimpse this phenomenon will be in 2015. Those expecting to see the moon change color will be disappointed. The term simply refers to the unusual occurrence of a second full moon within one calendar month, and since we already had a full moon on August 2, this is a blue moon, and the first seen in the United States since December 2009.
