Monochrome Weekend - Winchester Cathedral

Choir and Nave, Winchester Cathedral, United Kingdom

Last weekend I shared a photo of the beautiful sanctuary of Winchester Cathedral. From the same place from which that picture was taken, I turned around and looked down the beautiful choir area through the long nave to the porch. It is called the "nave" from the same word as navy. The church is the ship of life which carries us to the Lord.

The delicate wooden tracery which decorate the misericord of the choir is amazing. This exceptionally beautiful cathedral was begun in the year 1079 and has an interesting history. The church is still is regular use with an ambitious schedule of services and activities. They have an interesting web site.

Oh! The light makes this a spectacular shot.
I had never connected "nave" with "navy" before; "on some fancied resemblance in shape", says the online etymological dictionary guy. Thanks for the word, as well as the photo!

Although I am not in the least a religious person, I can be moved to tears by the beauty available to us within a church such as this. The lighting emphasises the glory that is praised within.

Good post.

I love cathedrals, especially the choir and pipe organ to accompany the architecture. Our catheral in Sydney is quite spartan by comparison but I still enjoy worshiping there as often as I can (about once a month).

Beautiful! I can only imagine what it must feel like to stand there, allowing all my senses to absorb it.
