SOOC Sunday - - 1933 Pierce Arrow

Saturday I met my friend Yogi and his faithful companion SuperPizzaBoy at the Expo Center for the Leake Auto Auction.   I love cars old and new and here were hundreds of beautiful automobiles, antiques, hotrods, and customs.  It is fair to say that some of these will be popping up in our respective blogs over the next few weeks.

I would wager that very few cars have the style and panache of a 1933 Pierce Arrow. Pierce-Arrows were stately vehicles that commanded admiration and respect and had a price tag to match. The individuals who bought the most elite Pierce-Arrows were individuals that were high on the social ladder and for whom cost was not an issue. The Pierce-Arrow catered to every demand and request, even keeping special colors on hand for important families and only using those colors for those vehicles and non-others. Most of the vehicle was custom, including the carpets, luggage, trunks, and seats. The Pierce-Arrows were more than just a custom and exclusive automobile, they were also known for their quality, reliability, performance, and sophistication. The going price for a Pierce Arrow was from $2500 and $3500.

Black and White Weekend - Tradition

Oklahoma became a state in 1907.  Before that it was Oklahoma Indian Territory.  People of many tribes were relocated here during the 19th century and a significant number of Oklahomans are of American Indian descent.  I am part Cherokee.  Powwows are held in many places and feature colorful dancing competitions.  The big powwows in Tulsa and Oklahoma City are open to all tribes.  These events are an important way in which customs are honored and passed down from generation to generation.  Here we see a father helping his son with a very fine costume for the junior dancing contest.  They are each wearing a porcupine roach.  The roach is typically constructed of porcupine guard hair (not quills) and hair from the tail of the white-tail deer.

Ruby Tuesday - Smokey is Twelve

Every Monday evening a small group of gentlemen meet at my house for a "Prayer and Share" group.  We have been doing this for over 15 years.  For the past 12 years my dog Smokey has been a faithful member of the group.  We generally celebrate his birthday with a cake and this year he is 12.  Smokey gets his own slice.  He likes this a lot.  Notice that he is wearing his red collar.

Thursday Challenge: Stairs - Philbrook Gardens

The beautiful gardens behind the Philbrook Art Museum sprawl down the hill to a little pond reminiscent of the one in Monet's garden.  It is beautiful in all seasons.  The long steps in the first photo are on the left in the second.  Inside is a wonderful collection of paintings and sculpture but I think I enjoy the gardens even more than the art and go and wander around as often as I can.  Now that I think about it the gardens are as surely art as anything inside.

Skywatch Friday - Jazz Depot

Sue and I had a great Thursday evening at the Jazz Depot shown here under a blue Oklahoma sky.  This former train station and Tulsa icon is now the administrative headquarters of the Tulsa Symphony and the home of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame.  There is jazz at lunch time and most Sunday evenings at 5:00 PM as well as special programs from time to time.  We went to see Doc Severinsen and his orchestra two Saturdays ago.

Last night was a dinner for patrons and a most excellent talk by Dr. John Edward Hasse.  Dinner music was provided by a jazz quartet with singer from the University of Tulsa and they were top notch.

Dr. John Edward Hasse-music historian, pianist, award winning author and record producer, is visiting Tulsa for the seventy seventh season of the Tulsa Town Hall. Mr. Hasse serves as Curator of American Music at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History.

Thursday Challenge - Antique Hand Tools

Here is a machete, and a collection of chisels and screw drivers.

Here is a collection of rasps and files.

The top wrench is an old monkey wrench, on the bottom is a pipe wrench.

These are planes used to smooth flat wood surfaces.

These are draw knives used to shape and smooth wooden boards and curved legs.

These wood working tools belonged to my wife Sue's first husband's grandfather. They were used to make a child's bed that was 100 years old when she acquired it over 40 years ago. More simply put, they are around 150 years old and came from central Illinois just after the Civil War.
