Macro Monday - Wheel Bug

The Wheel Bug is one of several true bugs commonly called assassin bugs.  This somewhat scarey looking bug is a beneficial insect that lives on caterpillers, Japanese beetles, and other insects generally considered to be pests.  The name comes from the curved pronotal shell which looks like a cogged wheel.  More about it HERE.  There is a whole world of interesting creatures living in our gardens if we only stop to look closely.

Absolutely - about the number of interesting creatures in our gardens. One of the things I've appreciated about blogging is that it sends us off looking for even more than we might do otherwise - and I like that I can use my camera as a magnifying glass and view the insect clearly right there on the spot. Hurray for this digital world!

Yes, looks a bit scary, but aren't most critters beautiful in close-up perspective?

Never heard, or seen, this bug before. Good to know it eats pests rather than nice things.

Great photo of the assassin bug. I'm always glad to see predatory bugs doing their work, as long as they don't eat bees!

Cool picture and great lesson on good bugs/bad bugs.

Beautiful colors and detail! Next time I see this bug in our garden I'll appreciate him more ~ I didn't know he is a "good" bug, thanks for that. Enjoy your day!
