Safety Monitor on Duty

I was waiting to give Willy a ride home from school and watched this young man come out and take up his position. He is one of a number of Safety Monitors who help keep order in the halls and assist the younger children cross the street. He walked out smartly, dumped his knapsack on the grass, adjusted his yellow sash, and turned around to do his duty. It is an honor to be given the responsibility of a safety monitor and whoever he is, I was proud of him.

Hello
In France we have sometime safety monitors but they are oftem mothers or grannies !! Sometime they are employed by the city, but they are never young boy or girl, it's may be a shame...
I look at your new car : it's wonderfull !! now you can go everywhere as you like, it's fun !
Kisses

From what I read in the newspapers this position of "safety monitor" should be something we could copy.
Perhaps it would give the children of today a pride in themselves which appears to be lacking.

I know that's a sweeping statement but all we ever read about is "feral" children - a word that has become the adjective of choice where kids are concerned.

The kids who serve as Safety Monitors assist kids in getting off of school property. The school is set back from the main streets and traffic is rather quiet there. A few blocks over is Peoria and lots of traffic. At that intersection a retired gentleman with a hand held stop sign actually controls traffic when groups of children need to cross.

As for kids "nowadays" being worse than in previous generations, I don't really think so. The world changes and today's young people face different challenges but most kids are busy trying to cope with school and the task of growing up to be responsible productive young adults. I am optimistic.

Now there's something we don't give adequate attention to often enough! My youngest sister did this in grade school, and I had forgotten that until I saw your post! Thanks for bringing back a special memory!

I am proud to say that this is my son! I am thankful for your positive words about him as well as any other child who might take time out to do the same thing. The task is not just given to any child. The Child applies for the position and does it because he/she wants to.
You are so right, Children these days are not given the credit that they deserve. They face many problems and responsibilities that were not in play years ago. If we judge all children by the standards of "Oh, Kids These days!", then we are only holding our selves back from seeing that there are some amazing, caring children out there who have so much to offer!

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you so much for your comment. In the vast ocean of the internet I am surprised that you happened onto my blog and were able to recognize your son. What are the odds?

You have good reason to be proud. He is an example of what is good about "kids nowaday".
