The HOW Crew

We hired a crew from the HOW Foundation to do a fall clean-up. They cut down the dead stuff in the flower beds and raked all the leaves both front and back. We are all neat and tidy. They did a good job.

HOW obviously stands for something but I cannot begin to think!
A motley crew of young men - none of whom seem to know quite what to do with their hands after clearing your flower beds :-)

We have snow covering our untidy gardens so everything looks pristine.

Out of respect for their privacy I nelected to mention that HOW stands for Honesty, Openness and Willingness, the three corner stones to sobriety according to AA.

The HOW foundation provides live-in support and counseling to recovering alcoholics. They pay their way by hiring out for simple cleanup work. The gentleman 2nd from the right was the straw boss and probably had a bit more sobriety than his helpers. I have called them before and they do a good job and work pretty cheap. The money goes to the foundation which supports them.

They are a motley crew indeed but the goal is progress not perfection, right?

I have it on good authority that one of Santa's elves has put a small package in the mail to a lady in Leeds who has been very good.

As I am not a member of AA I had absolutely no idea what HOW meant so I do hope I haven't caused any embarrassment to anyone. Certainly none was intended.
What a brilliant idea though, I wonder if we have the same organisation here in the UK?
All I saw when I looked at your photograph was a group of healthy, handsome, young men who hadn't a clue what to do with their hands when they were "posing" for your photograph.

How exciting of an elf to mail a package to me - I get very few packages in the post so I look forward to receiving a surprise with great anticipation. I'll be sure to let Santa's elves know the minute it arrives!

Anne - you will have to try harder than that to embarrass me. Perhaps I should apologize to you. I had assumed that we were members of the same organization. I don't think I could have stayed sober without the support of my friends in AA. Good for you.

Nope - I did it all on my own - cold turkey so to speak. I did try AA several years ago but found it didn't work for me as, unfortunately, I didn't think I was an alcoholic when I heard the stories (drinking a.m. etc.etc.etc.) I was an alternate day two bottles of wine alkie with a penchant for phoning friends in the middle of the night and crying into my Chardonnay. A pain in the butt in other words. It took an overdose of Paracetamol to bring me to my senses - my anniversary is three years 17th December :-)
My greatest problem is I have erstwhile friends who still think it would be OK to have a drink as I'm not an alcoholic in the true sense of the word!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I no longer socialise with them -I'd rather do my jigsaws at home and let my true friends and family sleep, undisturbed.
