Native American Culture

We are home again after our little escape to the cabin on Tenkiller.

For those who expressed an interest in Native American or First Nations culture, I invite you to look at some photos from a Powwow we took two of our grandchildren to see last July. The Tulsa Powwow is a gathering of all interested tribes to enjoy traditional dance and song. The costumes are very beautiful and the dance competition very exciting. I hope you enjoy.

Pour ceux qui ont exprimé un intérêt dans des États-Unis ou la culture des Premières nations, je vous invite à regarder quelques photos à partir d'un Powwow nous a pris deux de nos petits-enfants pour voir Juillet dernier. Le Powwow Tulsa est un rassemblement de toutes les tribus de jouir de la danse traditionnelle et du chant. Les costumes sont très beaux et les concours de danse très excitant. Editing and uploading the clips reminds me of how much more trouble that is compared to the shoot and email of the stills. Maybe in some future generation of the iPhone we will be able to do vid clips.

Black and White Weekend - Tradition

Oklahoma became a state in 1907.  Before that it was Oklahoma Indian Territory.  People of many tribes were relocated here during the 19th century and a significant number of Oklahomans are of American Indian descent.  I am part Cherokee.  Powwows are held in many places and feature colorful dancing competitions.  The big powwows in Tulsa and Oklahoma City are open to all tribes.  These events are an important way in which customs are honored and passed down from generation to generation.  Here we see a father helping his son with a very fine costume for the junior dancing contest.  They are each wearing a porcupine roach.  The roach is typically constructed of porcupine guard hair (not quills) and hair from the tail of the white-tail deer.

Ruby Tuesday - Powwow Dancer

Oklahoma was originally Indian Territory and we still have more Native Americans than any other state in the union.  There are several all-tribe powwows held in Tulsa and other cities around the state with dancing and various traditional activities.   This young man is wearing a porcupine roach and is carrying a fan of Eagle feathers.

Thursday Challenge - Art

Lots of things qualify as "Art".  Every year Tulsa has an Indian Arts and Crafts Show as part of an all-tribe Powwow.  All sorts of beautiful things are offered to include paintings, silver jewelry, bead work and all sorts of neat stuff.  My personal favorite was the ceramic horned lizard, or as we used to say when I was a kid, the "horny toad".   This one was a bit more than life size and a very handsome fellow.
