Over the weekend Sue and I drove up north of Pawhuska to the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. This is a 39,000 acre (160 km2 ) tract of land owned by the Nature Conservatory, and is the largest remaining tallgrass prairie in the world. It is home to a herd of 2500 American Buffalo and runs from parts of
Oklahoma to northern
Kansas. While this photo of a newborn calf is not technically a macro, it is as close to the little guy and his mother as I cared to venture. This is a beautiful area especially at this time of year when the grass is green and lush.

They don't look much like a bison at that age do they. More like a beef or dairy calf.

ReplyDeleteWonderful! I've never seen a bison in the wild and it's hearbreaking to think there were millions just a couple of centuries ago.
