To retrace historic Highway 66 takes some doing. From Oklahoma City through New Mexico US 66 roughly parallels Interstate 40. Except that I 40 runs straight while US 66 wanders just north of I 40, then south. Where it is still in use for local traffic that means US 66 frequently crosses I 40 back and forth through a pair of underpasses. The temptation is to bypass the old road and stay on the 4 lane, but that would be cheating. We passed through a number of these little crossunders when we retraced Route 66 from Tulsa to Santa Fe in October of 2009.
I like the perspective and the look of the dirty road.
ReplyDeleteBoth US Route 40 and 66 were the way to go back in the day.
ReplyDeletei like the way you photographed this!!
ReplyDeleteyou were on a perfect spot to take this photo. did you stop traffic here?:p
ReplyDeleteI'd of cheated. Great pic.
ReplyDeletevery nicely composed shot
ReplyDeleteAh yes! Route 66!
ReplyDeleteOne reason I-40 runs more straight than old 66 is that when Eisenhower began the Interstate Highway program, he stipulated that certain sections of each Interstate be straight to accommodate emergency use of the road as landing/takeoff strips.
It would be great fun to take the trip you took.
When you passed through Amarillo, did you see the Cadillac Ranch?
A welcome contribution to Sunday Bridges.
But what a fun adventure!! :0)
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Route 66...
