Sunday Bridges - Old US 62 Bridge
This is the old US Highway 62 bridge over the Illinois River. It is just south of the current bridge which crosses the Illinois 2 miles east of Tahlequah at Highway 10. This old bridge was built in 1920 and abandoned in 1964 when the US 62 was re-routed and the current bridge was built. It is now too decrepit even for foot traffic but people fish from it.

You did a nice job of portraying the bridge in monochrome. It has a sort of lonely look.
ReplyDeleteA good shot. It makes me wonder about the depth of the water, as the road from that building across the river seems to come right to the edge - rather like a ford.
ReplyDeleteit looks like a skeleton of a bridge...b&w is perfect for this!
ReplyDeleteAnother old bridge with character.
ReplyDeleteIt makes a great photo subject though. Excellent capture and the B&W treatment is a perfect tweak. Well done.
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame the powers that be are not trying to restore this unusual and historical bridge. I guess that is the story all over our country. It certainly is here in our county. The structure is so interesting, and I love the fact that fishermen are continuing to use it.
ReplyDeleteNice bridge. Too bad that they can't use it for a pedestrian bridge.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Leora - it does look lonely. maybe a group will get together to save it, BEFORE it crumbles.
ReplyDeleteYes, nice capture - the monochrome is perfect for this abandoned bridge.
