Autumn Color

I like it when the leaves are different colors on the same tree.

  1. Lucky you still having colour on the trees - we're experiencing the first snow of winter!

The use of the word "yard" doesn't sit well with me. It's a beautiful garden, whereas "yard" means something hidden round the back of the house which houses the dustbin or I suppose I should use the phrase trash can?

  2. Front yard, front garden -- it is one of the little things about the English language that varies between the US and the UK.

If I have a grass lawn behind my house and dig part of it up to plant vegetables then I would say I have a vegetable garden in my back yard. There are lots of examples of this sort of thing.

There is even a blog devoted to this sort of thing. See: http://separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.com/

  3. Two great minds think alike - I was trying to remember the Shavian
quotation and wanted to use the word "sea" and knew full well I was incorrect. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks also for the new blog site - I shall look with interest.
