The noble dog waiting patiently for a walk with his new red collar and leash. Smokey is eleven and one half years old and still in great shape. He is an American Pit Bull Terrier and the most gentle loving dog I have ever had. Since he was 10 weeks old he has been taught good manners. He will not lick, will not jump up on you, will not jump up on the bed or on furniture unless invited. He just looks up at you expectantly waiting to be petted. He especially likes having his ears rubbed. He is especially gentle with children. If the child starts to get too rough or tries to ride him like a horsey, Smokey will just quietly walk away and retire to the bedroom.

Macro Monday - US One Dollar Coin

I bought a sandwich from a vending machine today, put a $5 bill into the slot and got back $1.25 in coin for change. Not 5 quarters, but a dollar coin and a quarter. From 1794 until 1978 the one dollar coin was large and heavy and until 1964 were made primarily of silver, hence the "silver dollar". Beginning in 1979 a new smaller dollar coin was introduced. It is estimated that if the new smaller dollar coin were to replace the dollar bill the savings over 30 years would be about $5.5 Billion dollars.

Unfortunately the smaller coin has been very unpopular and is rarely seen in common circulation. About the only place it is used is in vending machines. There are several series of the new coin. This is the reverse (tails) of the Presidential series. The obverse (heads) is the portrait of one of the presidents this being a 2011 coin with Ulysses S. Grant. The history of the American dollar is quite interesting and this is already too wordy. If you want to read all about it see Wikipedia.

Weekend Reflections - Strange Bright Light

Wednesday I stopped by Philbrook Art Center to see its current exhibit of European Masterworks on loan from the Speed Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. I came out just after 5 PM and looked across the street at a brilliant yellow light. At first I thought a house was on fire. Then on second look I thought it was some sort of large incandescent light. By the time I reached my van the light shifted a bit and I realized that I was looking at the reflection of the late afternoon sun on the windowpanes of the house just across from the entrance. I thought I would try and get a picture of it but by the time I got inside, took my camera out of its bag and maneuvered back to the right angle, the sun had dropped just enough so that the reflection had disappeared. It is surprising how quickly the light can change late in the afternoon. So Friday I drove back over to Philbrook at 5:00 PM, found the right spot, and got my picture. Seen through my zoom lens it lacks the element of surprise that caught my attention earlier but is still an interesting photograph. I hope you enjoy it.

Several years ago I planted some gourd seed along my back fence. I thought it might be fun to hav e a few gourds to turn into birdhouses or rattles or whatever. Little did I know how vigorous these things are. They took over the fence, ran up a utility pole and down the power lines into the next yard. I had more gourds than I knew what to do with. I gathered up the ones I could reach and hung them up to dry. If you think you can't grow stuff, plant gourds, then stand back.

Here is the photo of the little bar at the north window of the Jazz Depot, the old Frisco train station in the heart of downtown Tulsa. The keyboard set into the floor tile made this a natural for both Weekend Reflections and the Black and White Weekend memes. It has kind of a Humphrey Bogart feel about it that I like. Our son-in-law Jeff is a graphics designer and entered a nationwide poster contest for President Obama's re-election campaign . His was the winning poster out of over 1,000 entries. It is a clever image and we are very proud of him. I don't think there was a big prize other than bragging rights and a t-shirt but I suspect we will see it next year during the campaign. Remember, you saw it here first.

The Altar of Christ Church Episcopal in Tulsa, Oklahoma all set for Christmas Eve Mass at 5:30 PM on Saturday, December 24, 2011. It was a fine service with lessons, carols and a festival eucharist.

Now we are home stuffed with Sue's home made cookies and a pot of tea, ready for bed and a Christmas day of gifts, family games, and roast turkey with all the trimmings. It is a fitting birthday celebration for the one who came into this world to become man and demonstrate for us the love God has for all man kind.

We pray for all a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and the peace of God that passes all understanding.

Susan and her daughter Jennifer drove up to Chicago to be with her son Mark and his wife Elena when she had her baby.

This is their 5th little girl and just beautiful at 7 pounds and a few ounces. Mother and child are doing fine. They told me that when she started her serious contractions Mark rushed her to the hospital and the time between check in and delivery was a scant 20 minutes. I guess practice makes perfect.

In the automobile industry they call this just in time" delivery. Her sisters were very glad to greet her and took turns holding their new sister.

I was the Santa for Tulsa's Woodland Hills Mall for 6 seasons after I retired from 30 years with American Airlines. I had to give that up for health reasons but I still dust off the suit for my favorite charity, the New Hope Ministry which provides activities and mentoring for children with a family member in prison. My friend and foster son Mike Foster came along to assist me and these are his children. They are Gavin, Heaven, and Avery. Merry Christmas to all.

Last Sunday was the Sunday closest to December which is Saint Nicholas day for those liturgical churches that keep track of that sort of thing. As it turns out, because of my white beard and robust figure I have been called upon to represent both Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas on many occasions and have excellent costumes for both characters. Actually, both costumes represent the same character separated by about 16 centuries. In any case I was dressed up in my finest Cope and Mitre and played St Nicholas after church while an skilled photographer took photographs of any and all who wished to pose on St Nick's knee. The lovely woman in the picture above is none other than my dear wife Susan.

Thursday Challenge: Communication - Djembe Drum

This is a Djembe drum from Ghana, West Africa. I have several such drums and this one I play every Sunday Morning with the music ministry at my church. The interesting thing about a djembe is that the tone varies depending on where you strike it. A sharp slap near the edge gives a high pitched sound while a open palmed stroke at the center gives a much lower sound. Using the flat of the hand or individual fingers one can produce a surprising variety of sounds. This is one means of communicating with a drum.

You will notice that the head of this drum has been covered with calligraphy done on the goat skin head with Sharpie pens. Beginning at the top center and spiraling around the head in a clockwise direction are a number of prayers, scriptures, and blessings whose common element is that they have some personal meaning to me.

The graphic in the center is made of a single red line which loops around and reconnects with itself. The single unending line would remind us of the never ending love of God, or of infinity. The basic pattern contains four lobes which reminds us of the cross of Christ. On each arm are 3 loops which remind us of the Holy Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

In a sense when I play the drum, as the sound rises up from the drum head, the prayers rise up with the sound. So the drum communicates is several ways. At least that works for me. If you want to read the writing, start at the top center, and follow around until you arrive at the center. Please be careful that you do not strain your neck, or drop the monitor while rotating it. Happy Birthday to Susan

Today (Friday) was Susan's birthday and we celebrated by going to dinner at Bonefish Grill. There a lot of Bonefish locations in Florida and on the east coast but only one in Oklahoma. The food was excellent and our server Nick surprised the birthday girl with a really classy treat. Thanks for a very nice evening.

Skywatch Friday - Bridges across the Arkansas

Looking northwest up the Arkansas River from the pedestrian bridge we see the bridges which connect downtown Tulsa with the western part of the city. The red arrows in the images below are pointing to this cluster of bridges. Click on the images to get a larger view.

While we are talking about bridges, it should be noted that there are no less than 5 spans crossing the river at the same location. In the sky view on the left are the rail crossing, then the west bound lanes of I244/I75, the east bound lanes of I244/I75, the remains of the US66 bridge known locally as the 11th St bridge, and Southwest Boulevard to West Tulsa.

In the view on the right we see the network of exchanges that comprise the Inner Dispersal Loop. I must confess to you that I have lived here most all of my life and I still am not confident that I can thread my way through all of these on the first try. The key is to read the signs carefully and pray that you are in the right lane.

I had the distinct pleasure of sharing lunch with my youngest granddaughter Miss Wren Alston Miller on Friday noon. Her daddy and mommy were with us and it was nice to see Luke and Cara again. We enjoyed some fishy treats at the White River Fish Market. At 9 months of age Wren is on the verge of walking without assistance and seems to have figured out that if she smiles a lot the world is her oyster. She is a darling.

Thursday Challenge: Creative - My Son Adam

Adam is my eldest son and a very creative guy. He does marketing and advertising for an upscale Resort/Spa/Restaurant so he is creative for a living. But being creative is just naturally part of who he is.

He is an excellent cook and excels in a variety of styles to include Italian, Cajun, Chinese, and has become something of a Sushi Chef. It has been awhile since I have sampled some of his Sushi and would enjoy it again sometime - soon. (hint, hint)

He loves music and has been known to play trumpet, tuba, fiddle and guitar. Not content to just play a guitar he has constructed several. My favorite is made from a large cigar box. The tone is a bit thin but it plays well and has a unique appearance. Actually he plays quite well with some friends on Saturday night and at his church on Sunday morning.

When the ageing family dachshund injured his back and was unable to walk Adam fashioned a little cart to support his hind quarters, The dog happily scooted around as quickly as before. I could give many other examples of how how is creative in a very practical way. Adam is a clever fellow, a good dad to his two lovely daughters, and I am very proud of him. I am proud of all 3 of my sons of course but today is Adam's turn in the spotlight.

A beautiful new chainsaw carving has been completed at 34th Street and Riverside Drive. I live just off of Riverside and have watched with admiration as this took shape over the summer. The statue was commissioned by the property owner as a memorial to his niece who loved horses. The artist is Richard Quick of Spavinaw, Oklahoma. The west side of the Arkansas River is the site of the 33rd annual Oktoberfest, a celebration of Tulsa's German-American community. Under the many tents are found music, dancing, games, arts and crafts, and of course many varieties of beer and lots of good German food.

Weekend Reflections - Two Young Lovers

Two young lovers and their faithful dog. Well, I don't know that they are lovers but they seemed to be more interested in each other than in the dog. They are walking their dog out onto the Arkansas River which could more accurately be called the Arkansas sandbar as the lack of rain has left it almost devoid of water. Anyway, it is a beautiful day to be out and about and the sand looks solid enough. . We wish them luck.

Macro Monday - Betty Boop

I have planted a rose garden all in big pots and arranged them on the perimeter of the deck behind the house. This summer was brutally hot and dry and I had to water every single day to keep them alive. The heat scorched the blooms as soon as they started to open. Now that we are shifting into autumn they are beginning to put on a show.

When we visited Sue's brother last May we admired a 'Betty Boop' rose they had planted by their back door. I just had to have it. It is classified as a floribunda, semi-double, ivory-white flowers with red edges borne in clusters over a long period. They are mildly scented. New leaves are dark red, maturing to glossy green. We will enjoy this rose all summer long.

Chainsaw Carving - Lighthouse

This house at 4104 South Norfolk has at least 2 interesting features. The first is the fine chainsaw carving of a lighthouse by Clayton Coss. The second is that the house itself is a kit home ordered from Sears, Roebuck and Company and assembled after delivery. This particular model is the "Westly". I have no date for the construction of this house but the picture is from a 1919 catalog.

Tulsa has quite a number of kit homes. I would guess that the availability of these houses coincided with the boom in housing during the 1920's when the growth of the oil industry spurred a rush of housing in Tulsa. Cain's Ballroom - Tulsa's Timeless Honky-Tonk

Cain's Ballroom is an historic music venue at 423 North Main in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Built in 1924 as a large garage it was soon to serve as a dance hall and prohibition speakeasy for Tulsa's nouveau oil rich. By 1932 it was home to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, the pioneer of what became known as Western Swing.

Because of the orientation of the iconic sign on top of the hall it is almost always photographed from the south. When viewed from the north one sees the tall downtown buildings only a few blocks way.

This is Mandevilla, a vigorous flowering vine. With showy red flowers and glossy green foliage it should look great growing on my pergola. The problem is that I don't know that it will be winter hardy here in Tulsa. Right now I have it in a big pot and plan to keep it in the pot and let it winter over in my garage. I'll let you know next spring.

Sunday Bridges - Lewis Avenue Over I-44

Lewis Avenue crosses Interstate 44 on a bridge built in 1956. It is due to be demolished soon and replaced as part of the project to expand I-44 from Yale Avenue to the Arkansas River.

Wordless Wednesday - Dressing the Pergola

Back in the early summer we had Tulsa Woodscapes build a beautiful Pergola on our deck behind the house.

It looked very nice, but a little barren so we decided to add some potted plants.

Some climbing vines at the corners and roses in pots add quite a lot of color. Now that the summer heat has broken and it is pleasant to be outside again we are really enjoying it. Drop by for a glass of iced tea.
